In this Gospel reading, Jesus gives us a powerful image of how God treats us even when we fail to use the gifts he has given us.
Prayer
Put yourself in today’s Gospel reading and imagine that you hear Jesus talking about the fig tree that didn’t bear fruit but was allowed to live another year. Imagine that he is saying those words to you. If you were given one more year to bear fruit, what sorts of things would you do?
Resolution
In what areas of your spiritual or moral life have you found yourself tempted to be like Israel and want to “turn back”? What can you do to persevere so that you can bear more fruit in your life? Ask Jesus to show you where you need to make changes in your life in order to become a fruitful fig tree.
