Dear St Michael Family,
Before Advent, there lies before us the Solemnity of Christ the King and Thanksgiving Day. What are those things for which we must give thanks and whom shall we thank? Going back to the history of our nation, the founders of this republic humbly thanked the Great Divine Lord and Ruler for the gift of being a free nation, with her democratic principles for the pursuit of truth, happiness and justice for all. In the first national Thanksgiving Day proclamation under the Constitution, George Washington signed this powerful and inspiring prayer:
Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be. That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks, for his kind care and protection of the People of this country previous to their becoming a Nation …
And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions, to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually, to render our national government a blessing to all the people…
The founding fathers of this great nation gave us an insight who truly is the Sovereign Ruler and King of the World. Our free nation’s principles and constitution are grounded in this TRUTH. This reminds us also of what was said in the Vatican II papers: “God willed to leave them [human beings] in the hands of their own counsel, so that they would seek their Creator of their own accord and would freely arrive at full and blessed perfection by cleaving to God.” (Gaudium et Spes 17; Veritatis Splendor 38)
As we celebrate Thanksgiving Day and Christ the King, let us reflect upon these questions: Who is first in my life? Who has blessed me with all that possess and have right now?
I hope that the answer is Our Almighty God! Let us not forget this truth. Let us put forth our best efforts to pass this on to our children, family members and friends. For without God, there is no free state and no true freedom.
“For God is the king of all the earth; sing praises with a psalm!” (Psalm 47:7)
God bless America! Jesus, King of the Universe, have mercy on us!
