The Filipino Block Rosary Group
In 1977, the Filipino Block Rosary group was started by Fr. Camilo and Mrs. Lily Baker to promote the novena and devotion to Our Lady of Fatima. It follows the tradition in the Philippines where the statue goes from neighbor to neighbor until the Virgin visits the whole block. Here in the U. S., not everyone is Catholic so the process has been modified. In Livermore, the Virgin Mary statue is brought to different homes during the months of May and October. The name ‘Block Rosary’ stuck and is still used by Filipinos living in the U. S.
After Mrs. Baker died, Mrs. Crisanta Gallardo took over as leader of the group. Members Sally Buenconsejo and Corry Painter assisted. Most recently, Mrs. Gallardo's daughter, Lani Gallardo-Meyer replaced her mother as the new leader of the group.
